Is Monoply Street Repairs Just Your House

2 Answers 2

Yous can sell houses and hotels at whatever time, for any reason.

From the rules:

Houses and hotels may exist sold back to the Bank at any time for one-half the price paid for them.

The amount of money you accept to pay is based on the houses/hotels you had at the time you drew the card. Selling houses/hotels at this signal would not reduce the corporeality you have to pay.

While this is non addressed directly in the rulebook, multiple sources confirm this in a FAQ.

When assessed for street repairs, pay for all houses and hotels you own on the entire lath at that time.

  • That mentions two times (when you are assessed and when y'all pay) and says "at that time" without specifying which fourth dimension information technology's talking about. As I parse it, "When assessed for street repairs" is the triggering pre-status and "pay for all the houses and hotels you own on the entire board at that time" is the result. That means you pay for those you own at the time you lot pay. Consider, "When married, buy your spouse the gifts advisable at that time." It'due south much more natural to sympathize this to mean at the time yous're buying gifts, non the fourth dimension you got married.

  • @DavidSchwartz No, the only fourth dimension mentioned is "when assessed". I think the only reason the "when married" example is ambiguous is that "when married" tin can refer to a general long flow of time, not to one specific outcome. If you had said "when you accept your wedding", y'all would meet the deviation. "When assessed" is 1 specific moment in time, not a full general time frame during which a rule applied.

  • @DavidSchwartz You pay for the amount you take at the time you draw the card.

I accept always interpreted the card every bit:

  • Corporeality to pay = (£$40 * [no. of houses]) + (£$115 * [no. of hotels]). This corporeality is stock-still, regardless of any houses / hotels which may then need to exist sold. Which is to say - y'all cannot reduce the amount you lot need to pay by selling off houses and hotels.
  • If the player can afford it, they pay the amount to the banking company;
  • If the actor has insufficient greenbacks, then funds need to be raised through house / hotel sales and / or mortgaging / selling properties;
  • If funds all the same can't exist raised - bad luck. You're bankrupt and out of the game.
